Birth Planning

Do you have a vision for your baby's birth?

Birth preferences, also called a birth plan, is a communication tool that helps your care team know how you'd like your labor and birth to go.

Creating a birth preferences list is not a requirement, but if you have an idea for how you want your birth to go then it is a great idea to make one.

With your birth plan, you will...

...learn how to communicate your wants and needs, even as your care team changes shift

...advocate for yourself in a hospital setting

...learn about different interventions and options during labor, so you aren't learning about them in the moment

...think about what your "dream birth" would look like, and how to communicate what you want to your care team

...start discussions with your support person about how they can advocate for you, and what you expect from them during labor

Who should create a birth plan/preferences?

No matter where you are giving birth, creating a birth preferences tool can help start conversations with your care teams about your goals.

Birth Plans or Birth Preferences Lists are not legally binding documents and they are not required before birth. They are intended to help you communicate your wants and needs to anyone that enters your birth space.

You can create your own at home, but many families have expressed that they didn't know what to ask for, what belonged on a birth plan, or even what everything was. That's where I come in! I'll walk you through your birth plan step by step and at the end of our session, you will leave with a fully customized birth preferences list to bring with you to your birth.

I recommend scheduling your session with me when you are early in the third trimester, though we can really meet at any time during the pregnancy.

What happens during a birth planning session?

During a birth planning session, we will meet face-to-face over Zoom to talk all about your wants and goals during your birth.

It does not matter what your birth goals are, anyone can have a birth plan! Whether you are anticipating a vaginal birth, cesarean birth, to be medicated or unmedicated, with an epidural or minimal intervention...we will talk about all sorts of different options you may have and about some decisions you may face during your birth.

We will also discuss different ways you can advocate for yourself in labor. You will learn how to ask questions that get answers and will feel confident asking for the care you deserve.

Testimonials

I found my birth planning session to be very informative and helped me make decisions about topics I didn't know alot about! My birth plan was written in a way that the hospital staff took my wants seriously instead of over looking what I was asking for and my birth went almost a 100% how I wanted it!

"...you gave me a lot of information and you taught me things I had no idea about...I left the zoom feeling heard and feeling more prepared knowing I had something really important to me written by someone who is in the L&D field...you explain things in such a way that I totally understood what would happen or what I wanted in my plan."
